I Ching with tarot is a hybrid mode that combines the structure of the 64 I Ching hexagrams (the Book of Changes, one of the foundational works of Chinese philosophy) with the symbolic language of tarot. The tool generates a hexagram and offers a reading mediated by the Rider-Waite, providing an archetypal advice and a "moving" view of the topic.

What is the I Ching

The I Ching is an ancient Chinese text: the canonical version dates from the Zhou dynasty (11th-8th century BC), with even older layers. It consists of 64 hexagrams, each made of six continuous (yang) or broken (yin) lines. Each hexagram has a title (The Creative, The Receptive, The Army, The Possession of the Great, Modesty, etc.) and a text describing the situation, the right attitude and possible developments. Carl Gustav Jung was a convinced advocate.

Changing lines

A unique feature of the I Ching is the concept of changing line: some of the six lines can "transform" from yang to yin or vice versa, generating a second hexagram describing the direction in which the situation is moving. The online tool draws both the initial hexagram, any changing lines and the arrival hexagram.

How to use online

Enter your question (ideally open and reflective: "what is the right attitude in this situation?", "what is changing in my life?") and shuffle. The tool simulates six tosses of three coins: it returns the drawn hexagram, the changing lines, the transformation hexagram and an interpretation that combines the classic I Ching commentary with a small linked tarot arcanum.

FAQ

How many hexagrams are there?

Sixty-four, from all possible combinations of six yin or yang lines.

What is a "changing line"?

A line that is transforming: in the full reading it produces a second hexagram describing the movement in progress, a qualitative forecast.

Can I ask the same question twice?

Chinese tradition discourages consulting the I Ching repeatedly on the same question at close distance. If the answer is unclear, meditate on it rather than reformulating immediately.
