Mancies (from the Greek manteia, "divination") are techniques that observe natural phenomena, objects or gestures to extract a symbolic meaning. On Tarotsi we gather the best-known mancies in a digital version: coffee reading (caffeomancy), pendulum (radiesthesia), alomancy (salt), velomancy (candles), dice divination (cleromancy), capnomancy (smoke), dominomancy and shell oracle.

Origin of mancies

Attention to the signs of the world to read the present or the future is as old as humanity. Babylonians and Assyrians practiced haruspicy (reading entrails) and ornithomancy (bird flight); Greeks consulted the oracle of Delphi; Etruscans and Romans studied lightning, sky signs and the behavior of cattle. From these practices come the dozens of mancies classified in medieval and Renaissance times, many still of anthropological interest today.

Caffeomancy, velomancy and capnomancy

These are everyday mancies. Caffeomancy reads the shapes left by coffee grounds on the cup and is a common tradition in the eastern Mediterranean, especially in Turkish, Greek, Balkan and Armenian culture. Velomancy observes the way a candle burns, the wax tears and the flame shape. Capnomancy interprets the smoke from a flame or from incense. On Tarotsi they are recreated symbolically with images generated on the fly.

Alomancy and dice divination

Alomancy, or salt reading, was practiced in ancient Mediterranean cultures to read prodigies and family signs: you observe the shapes salt takes on a damp or hot surface. Dice divination (cleromancy) uses dice rolling: the number, the sequence and the position say something about the topic of the question. On Tarotsi you can roll one, two or three dice and get a symbolic overall reading.

Pendulum, shells and dominomancy

The pendulum is the basis of modern radiesthesia: you ask a closed question and observe the pendulum movement (rotation, lateral swing, frontal swing). Shell divination, of Afro-Cuban and Brazilian origin, uses the way shells fall to consult the orixás. Dominomancy reads the dominoes as small numerical arcana, with meanings combining the two values of the drawn tile.

Limits of mancies

Online mancies are a symbolic homage to ancient traditions, not a ritual reproduction. Images of salt, candle, smoke or shells are generated automatically and the interpretation is AI-produced. They do not replace traditional practices nor professional advice. For more details see the disclaimer page.

How to choose a mancy

For a closed question (yes/no, now/later) try the pendulum. For an everyday outlook use caffeomancy or velomancy. For a quick advice based on chance try dice divination. To explore emotions and relationships, capnomancy and shells work well. Dominomancy is useful for small practical or numerical issues.

FAQ

Are mancies reliable?

They have cultural and symbolic value. Historically they are divination practices, not verifiable predictive systems. Their contemporary usefulness lies in fostering observation, reflection and the framing of an inner question.

Can I do two mancies on the same question?

Yes, it can help to triangulate the message. Remember each mancy has its own language: do not insist until you "get" the answer you want to hear.

Do I need to know the original tradition?

No. The mancies on Tarotsi are presented in an informative way: brief explanation, random draw, automatic interpretation. For more depth check the glossary, with entries dedicated to caffeomancy, velomancy, alomancy or the pendulum.

Do I need physical tools?

No. All mancies are recreated on screen: salt, candle, pendulum, shells, dice and dominoes are generated on the fly and the result is symbolic, not ritual in the strict sense.
