Zodiac compatibility, or simplified classical synastry, compares the sun signs of two people and evaluates their symbolic affinities. Full synastry (a calculation that takes the two natal charts and the crossed aspects between their planets) is more sophisticated, but reading sun signs alone is the accessible first step and the most widespread.
Traditional astrologers consider: the element of the signs (Fire-Air activate each other, Earth-Water nourish each other, while Fire-Water or Earth-Air are more complex); the modality (cardinal, fixed, mutable: same-modality signs tend to clash); the angular relationship between the two signs (conjunction, sextile, square, trine, opposition). These three dimensions give a symbolic affinity grid.

Sun-signs-only reading is simplified: two "incompatible" people can have wonderful relationships if other chart planets harmonize (Moon-Venus, Sun-Mars, ascendant-descendant). A truly in-depth reading requires the full synastry, with both charts and all crossed aspects.
In pure sun-sign theory: same element (Aries-Leo, Taurus-Virgo, Gemini-Libra, Cancer-Pisces) and complementary elements (Fire-Air, Earth-Water) tend to flow better. But no combination is "forbidden".
Zodiac opposites (Aries-Libra, Taurus-Scorpio) have strong complementary attraction. Intense, among the most transformative but also the most tense relationships.
Compatibility by sun signs is a synthesis. Synastry is the complete astrological calculation of the two natal charts overlaid. It is much richer and requires complete data of both.
