Astrological aspect
In astrology, the aspect is the angular relationship measured in degrees between two planets (or between a planet and a sensitive point) in the natal chart or in the sky of transits. Aspects tell how the energies of the two planets dialogue with each other: harmoniously, conflictually or neutrally.
Main aspects
Conjunction (0°): fusion, intensification. Sextile (60°): support, light opportunity. Square (90°): productive tension, friction. Trine (120°): harmony, natural talent. Opposition (180°): polarity, confrontation. Traditionally sextiles and trines are "easy", squares and oppositions "difficult", the conjunction depends on the planets involved.
Minor aspects
There are also less-used minor aspects: semi-sextile (30°), semi-square (45°), quincunx or inconjunct (150°). They are considered by some schools, ignored by others. The "orb" (tolerance in degrees within which the aspect is considered active) varies from 1° for minor aspects to 8°-10° for slow planets.
FAQ
Is a square always negative?
No. It is a tension: it stimulates growth, talent, development. Many successful personalities have significant squares. The square "makes you work".
How many aspects does a natal chart have?
Variable: typically between 15 and 30 main aspects, depending on the chosen orb and the number of planets considered.
What is an "applying" aspect?
An aspect that is still forming because the faster planet is approaching: it is considered symbolically more "alive" compared to a separating one, which is moving away.
