The Tibetan horoscope combines the Chinese zodiac (twelve animals) with the five elements of Vajrayana Buddhist tradition (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water), creating a 60-combination cycle that repeats every sixty years. It is the official astrological system of historical Tibet and is still practiced today by the Tibetan community, in particular in monasteries.

Origin and tradition

Tibetan astrology or "Tsi" developed between the 7th and 11th centuries AD, fusing Indian (jyotisha) and Chinese (sexagesimal calendar) elements with the Buddhist context of the Land of Snows. Two main branches: Kartsi, of Indian origin, based on planets and zodiac; Naktsi, of Chinese origin, based on twelve animals and elements. The annual Tibetan horoscope mainly uses Naktsi.

The twelve animals

Same as the Chinese zodiac, with Tibetan names: Mouse (Jiba), Ox (Lang), Tiger (Tak), Hare (instead of Chinese Rabbit), Dragon (Druk), Snake (Drul), Horse (Ta), Sheep (instead of Goat), Monkey (Trel), Bird (Jakhyi), Dog (Khyi), Pig (Phak). Symbolic qualities are similar to Chinese ones with Buddhist nuances.

The five elements and Losar New Year

Each year is linked to an element (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water) and a gender (Yang male / Yin female). The Tibetan New Year is called Losar and is generally celebrated in late January or February, with the new Moon of the first month of the Tibetan lunisolar calendar. The tool correctly applies the exact Losar date of each year.

FAQ

Difference with Chinese horoscope?

They share twelve animals but differ in New Year calculation (Losar is slightly different) and in cultural context: the Tibetan is set in a Vajrayana Buddhist tradition with specific rites.

Do I need time of birth?

No, just the date. Time is only used in Kartsi (Indian astrology adopted in Tibet) for "Mewa" calculation (personal magic square), which the basic tool does not consider.

Can I use a mantra for my animal?

Tibetan tradition associates meditative practices with each animal. The tool may suggest a symbolic mantra, not a substitute for formal Buddhist practice guided by a master.
