Arithmancy, from the Greek arithmos "number" and manteia "divination", is an ancient practice of numerical divination documented in classical Greece and in the medieval Arab world. It works with a person s name and date of birth to derive meaningful numbers. It is partly overlapping with modern numerology but retains its own traditions (use of the original Greek alphabet, Arab "abjad" techniques, calculations with isopsephy).
In ancient Greece, isopsephy assigned a numerical value to each letter of the Greek alphabet (alpha 1, beta 2, gamma 3, ...) and was used to analyze words, names and oracles. In the medieval Arab world the "abjad" system associated a numerical value with each letter of the Arabic alphabet. In Hebrew tradition, gematria does the same with the Hebrew alphabet. All these practices are ancestors of modern Pythagorean-revival theosophical numerology.
