"Numbers rule the universe." — Pythagoras

Arithmancy, from the Greek arithmos "number" and manteia "divination", is an ancient practice of numerical divination documented in classical Greece and in the medieval Arab world. It works with a person s name and date of birth to derive meaningful numbers. It is partly overlapping with modern numerology but retains its own traditions (use of the original Greek alphabet, Arab "abjad" techniques, calculations with isopsephy).

Historical tradition

In ancient Greece, isopsephy assigned a numerical value to each letter of the Greek alphabet (alpha 1, beta 2, gamma 3, ...) and was used to analyze words, names and oracles. In the medieval Arab world the "abjad" system associated a numerical value with each letter of the Arabic alphabet. In Hebrew tradition, gematria does the same with the Hebrew alphabet. All these practices are ancestors of modern Pythagorean-revival theosophical numerology.

What Tarotsi returns

The arithmancy tool on Tarotsi combines some traditional techniques: it extracts the number of the name, evaluates the recurrence of vowels and consonants, calculates the letter table (how many per category), spots any karmic numbers in totals. It returns a richer numerical profile than just life path or personality.

How to use online

Enter full name and date of birth. The tool shows: number of the name (sum of all letters), number of the surname, number of the full name, recurrences (which number dominates, which is absent), any karmic numbers, a brief combined reading that interweaves the different figures.

FAQ

Difference between arithmancy and numerology?

Arithmancy is the ancient term and covers Greek, Arab and Hebrew traditions. Theosophical numerology is its modern, simplified version popularized in the 20th century.

What is gematria?

It is the Hebrew version of arithmancy: associates a numerical value with the letters of the Hebrew alphabet and is used in Kabbalah and traditional exegesis of sacred texts.

Can I use a foreign name?

Yes. The Pythagorean table used by Tarotsi is based on the Latin alphabet, applicable to any name written in Latin script. For names in other alphabets (Greek, Hebrew, Arabic, Cyrillic) tradition uses the original tables.
