Pendulum
The pendulum is a tool of radiesthesia: a small weight (crystal, metal, wood) hanging from a chain, used to obtain yes/no answers from the involuntary movement of the hand. The practice draws on the tradition of dowsing (searching for water with rods) and was codified as radiesthesia in the 20th century, especially in France and Germany.
How it "answers"
The physiological principle is the ideomotor effect: small involuntary movements of the hand amplified by the pendulum. Tradition assigns a divinatory meaning to these oscillations. The most widespread codification: clockwise rotation = yes, anticlockwise = no, lateral swing = neutral or not yet, frontal swing = question to be rephrased.
