Theosophy
Theosophy (from the Greek theos "god" and sophia "wisdom") is a modern esoteric current founded in 1875 in New York by Helena Petrovna Blavatsky (1831-1891), Henry Steel Olcott and William Quan Judge with the Theosophical Society. It maintains the existence of an "ancient wisdom" common to all great religions and esoteric traditions.
Doctrine
Theosophy teaches: the unity of all religions in their deep root, the existence of "Masters" who guard occult wisdom, reincarnation and karma as a cosmic law, the spiritual evolution of the soul through successive lives, the existence of subtle planes beyond the physical (etheric, astral, mental, causal). Blavatsky s foundational works are "Isis Unveiled" (1877) and "The Secret Doctrine" (1888).
Influence
Theosophy deeply influenced twentieth-century esoteric culture. From it branched Rudolf Steiner s anthroposophy, the Krishnamurti movement (raised as "World Teacher" by theosophy and later distancing himself), the contemporary New Age. Concepts such as "aura", "chakras in the West", "akashic records", "seventh race" entered popular spirituality through theosophy.
FAQ
Is it a religion?
It presents itself as a "synthesis of religion, science and philosophy". Technically it is a spiritual esoteric movement rather than a confessional religion.
Is it linked to Satanism?
No. Some statements by Blavatsky on the "true nature of Lucifer" (bringer of light) have been misused; theosophy is not Satanist.
Does it still exist?
Yes. The Theosophical Society is still active, with international headquarters in Adyar, India, and offices in many countries. Several derivative groups continue the tradition.
