Reading session
In cartomancy, a reading is the consultation session: a conversation between the reader (whoever shuffles and interprets the cards) and the querent (whoever asks the question), structured around one or more spreads.
Structure of a reading
A typical reading begins with the formulation of the question, continues with shuffling the deck, the chosen spread (one card, three cards, Celtic cross) and interpretation card by card and as a whole. It closes with any follow-ups, a synthesis and a final piece of advice. Duration ranges from a few minutes to half an hour for the wider spreads.
Ethics of the practice
Good practice in readings includes: clarity about the limits of the tool (it is symbolic), respect for the querent s freedom, avoiding medical or legal diagnoses, not promising certain outcomes. The cards should be offered as a compass for reflection, not as an infallible oracle. Fees, where charged, must be transparent.
FAQ
How long does a reading last?
From a few minutes for a short spread to 30-45 minutes for in-depth consultations with several spreads.
Can I read for myself?
Yes. Self-administered readings are very common, especially in the form of card of the day or three weekly cards.
Are online readings reliable?
It depends on the competence and ethics of those offering them. Be wary of readings that promise certain results or charge high fees for "necessary" rituals.
