Past lives

The expression "past lives" refers, in reincarnationist traditions, to the belief that the soul has gone through previous existences whose memories may surface in imagination, dreams or under light hypnosis. It is present in Indian philosophies (Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism), in twentieth-century theosophy and in some New Age practices.

Reincarnation and karma

In classical Hinduism the soul reincarnates in a cycle (samsara) governed by the law of karma, until liberation (moksha). In Buddhism the emphasis is on the continuity of mental streams rather than on a substantial soul. In the theosophy of Helena Blavatsky and the anthroposophy of Rudolf Steiner, reincarnation is proposed in a Western esoteric key.

Regressions and psychology

Late twentieth-century transpersonal psychotherapy developed "past-life regression" techniques based on light hypnosis. Academic psychology does not consider the memories produced as verifiable historical data: it reads them as imaginative material that reveals something of the present. For deep experiences a qualified professional is recommended.

FAQ

Is reincarnation proven?

No. It remains a philosophical-religious framework accepted by some traditions and rejected by others. Science does not regard it as a verified phenomenon.

Are regressions therapies?

They are guided imagination techniques. Their therapeutic value is debated: in expert hands they can be a tool for psychological work; in unqualified hands they can produce false memories.

Can I do regression on my own?

For deep experiences a context guided by a professional is better. The past-lives test on Tarotsi is a light symbolic tool, not a regression.
