Paranormal

The term "paranormal" indicates phenomena that official science does not recognise as real but that are reported by many people: telepathy, clairvoyance, precognition, psychokinesis, ghosts, near-death experiences, extrasensory perception (ESP). They are the object of study of parapsychology, a discipline not recognised as a fully fledged science.

Parapsychological research

Systematic studies of paranormal phenomena begin with J. B. Rhine at Duke University in the 1930s. In recent decades, laboratories such as PEAR (Princeton, until 2007) and projects such as the CIA s "Star Gate" have investigated the matter. Some studies report significant statistical deviations; independent meta-analyses remain controversial. The mainstream scientific community considers paranormal phenomena unconfirmed.

Organised scepticism

Sceptical organisations (CICAP in Italy, CSI internationally) study and in many cases expose "paranormal" phenomena presented as authentic, showing frauds, methodological errors or natural explanations. James Randi offered for decades one million dollars to anyone who could demonstrate paranormal abilities under controlled conditions: nobody won.

FAQ

Do paranormal phenomena exist?

People report experiences; mainstream science does not consider them confirmed. The question remains open at an experimental level.

Can I develop abilities?

Not in a verifiable way. Practices of meditation and attention refine real capacities (awareness, intuition) that some interpret as paranormal.

Should I be wary of paranormal promises?

Yes, when they promise guaranteed results, certain predictions or "necessary rituals" for payment.
