Lunation
The lunation is the complete cycle of the Moon from one conjunction with the Sun (New Moon) to the next, with an average duration of 29 days, 12 hours and 44 minutes (synodic month). It includes the four main phases: New Moon, first quarter, Full Moon, last quarter.
The four phases
New Moon: the Moon is in conjunction with the Sun, invisible from Earth; traditionally it is the moment for new beginnings. First quarter: half of the disc is illuminated; an energy of building. Full Moon: the Moon is in opposition to the Sun, fully illuminated; a moment of maximum visibility and expression. Last quarter: illumination decreases; a moment of release and review.
Eclipses
Some special lunations coincide with solar eclipses (during the New Moon, when Sun, Moon and Earth are aligned) or lunar eclipses (during the Full Moon). In astrology, eclipses are considered moments of particular symbolic intensity: cycles that close or open with greater force.
