Lunar calendar

The lunar calendar is the system that follows the phases of the Moon in its average 29.5 days (synodic month). It was the calendar of the first civilizations (Mesopotamian, Egyptian, Hebrew, Islamic) and is still used today in traditional agriculture, popular gastronomy and some religious traditions.

The four phases

New Moon: beginning, intentions, sowing. Waxing Moon: building, accumulation, active work. Full Moon: visibility, intensity, symbolic harvest. Waning Moon: release, decanting, rest. Each phase lasts about 7-8 days and has distinct symbolic qualities used in many traditional practices.

Traditional uses

In European agriculture, sowing was done during the waxing Moon and harvesting during the waning Moon. Peasant cuisine bottled wine during the waning Moon to favor its decantation. Popular cosmetology suggests cutting hair during the waxing Moon to make it grow back stronger (an effect not scientifically demonstrated).
