Intuition
Intuition is the capacity to perceive or understand something immediately, without resorting to explicit reasoning. It is studied by philosophy, psychology and the neurosciences. According to Daniel Kahneman (Thinking, Fast and Slow, 2011) it is a function of the brain s "System 1": fast, automatic, based on pattern recognition.
Expert intuition
Studies of experts (chess players, doctors, firefighters) show that the intuition of those with deep experience in a field is often accurate: it is a rapid synthesis of accumulated patterns. In new fields or under stress, intuition is less reliable and can be confused with cognitive biases. Intuitive mastery requires a regular context and immediate feedback.
Spiritual intuition
In esoteric and spiritual traditions, intuition is often described as the "voice" of the inner guide, of the deep Self, of the spirit. Practices of silence, meditation and body listening are presented as ways to "refine it". From a psychological viewpoint, such practices effectively develop capacities of awareness and subtle perception.
FAQ
Is intuition always right?
No. It is accurate in fields of deep experience; it can be wrong in new fields or under bias.
Difference between intuition and fear?
Intuition tends to be calm and steady; fear is noisy and changeable. Discernment sharpens with practice.
Can you train it?
Yes: with experience in the domain, body awareness, stress reduction. Psychology does not consider intuition a "magical faculty" but a cognitive function that can be developed.
