Guardian angel
The guardian angel is, in Christian tradition and Jewish Kabbalah, the personal angel assigned to each human being to guide and protect them. The doctrine is present in Catholic and Orthodox Christianity and in many esoteric traditions of Judaism. In the contemporary world it has entered popular New Age spirituality.
Christian tradition
The idea of a personal guardian angel develops in early Christianity and is formalized by St. Thomas Aquinas in the Summa Theologica. The liturgical feast of the Guardian Angel is celebrated on October 2. In catechisms he is described as an invisible spiritual companion who intercedes in prayer.
Kabbalistic tradition
In Jewish Kabbalah there are 72 angels of the Tree of Life, each linked to a five-day period of the year. The "Shem ha-Mephorash" (divine name composed of 72 letters) generates the 72 angelic names. Popular esoteric practice assigns to each person, based on their date of birth, a guardian angel from the 72.
