Feng Shui
Feng shui (Chinese 風水, "wind and water") is the ancient Chinese discipline of organising space to favour harmony between the environment and its inhabitants. It is based on the cosmological principles of yin-yang, the five elements (Wu Xing: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water) and Qi (vital energy).
Basic principles
Qi must be able to flow freely: cluttered spaces, sharp corners and stairs facing the door are considered problematic. Yin-yang calls for balance between dark and bright zones, rest and activity. The five elements must be balanced: too much Metal or too much Water creates disharmony. The Luo Pan compass is the traditional tool for reading the directions of a house.
Traditions and adaptations
There are several schools: Form (reading the landscape), Compass (use of the Luo Pan), Eight Aspirations (Bagua), Flying Stars. In the West, the simplified "New Age Bagua" popularised by Lin Yun in the 1980s is common. The distinction between traditional school and commercial version is important.
FAQ
Does it work?
The principles of good layout, light, ventilation and removal of clutter have real effects on domestic wellbeing. The more esoteric components (magnetic directions, year of birth) have no scientific confirmation.
Should it be followed literally?
No. Even traditional practitioners adapt the principles to context. A dogmatic approach is usually a sign of more commercial schools.
Can I apply it on my own?
Yes, with reliable guides. For professional consultations there are certified practitioners, although there is no unified register.
