Enneagram
The Enneagram (from the Greek ennea "nine" and gramma "figure") is a personality classification system into nine types, represented on the geometric figure of a circle with an inscribed hexagon. It was popularised in the mid-20th century by Oscar Ichazo and Claudio Naranjo, drawing on Eastern mystical traditions (Sufism, Gurdjieff) and original syntheses.
The nine types
1 Reformer (perfectionist), 2 Helper (giver), 3 Performer (achiever), 4 Romantic (individualist), 5 Investigator (observer), 6 Loyalist (sceptic), 7 Enthusiast (epicure), 8 Challenger (boss), 9 Peacemaker. Each type has core qualities, deep motivation, core fear and "wings" (the adjacent types that influence it).
Status of the model
The Enneagram is used in coaching, training and personal growth. Academic psychology has not validated it as a psychometric test (the RHETI is not among the standard instruments). It remains a useful tool as a self-exploration grid, not to be confused with clinical diagnosis.
FAQ
Difference from MBTI?
The MBTI (Myers-Briggs) classifies into 16 types based on four dichotomies. The Enneagram classifies into 9 types based on deep motivation. They are models with different logics.
Is it scientific?
Not in the strong sense. It is a self-exploration model, useful as a prompt but not validated as a psychometric test.
Can I change type?
According to the Enneagram, your core type remains fixed, but the "level of health" of the type improves (or worsens) with awareness and personal work.
