Dendromancy

Dendromancy, from the Greek dendron "tree" and manteia "divination", is the practice of drawing signs from the observation of trees: shape of branches, way they move in the wind, position of leaves, anomalies in the trunk. It was practised particularly in the Greek oracular sanctuaries and in Celtic druidic traditions.

Tradition

The Greek oracle of Dodona, sacred to Zeus, interpreted the rustling of the wind through the leaves of the sacred oaks. In Celtic druidic traditions, trees (oak, ash, birch, rowan) had specific meanings and were consulted for clan decisions. The Ogham, the sacred Celtic alphabet, associates a plant with each letter and is also used as an oracle.

Symbolism of trees

Oak: strength, longevity. Ash: connection between worlds. Birch: new beginnings, purity. Elm: maturity, ability to stand between worlds. Willow: mourning, melancholy, lunar intuition. Rowan: protection. Each culture has its own tree symbolism.

FAQ

Is it linked to the Celtic Ogham?

Yes. The Ogham, the early medieval Irish sacred alphabet, associates a plant with each letter and lends itself to divinatory uses.

Is it a religious practice?

It was so in ancient cults (pagan, druidic, at Greek oracles). Today it is mainly a historical curiosity and of neo-pagan interest.

Can I practise it?

Yes, in a contemplative key. Sitting under a tree, observing, listening to the rustling: a meditative practice of intrinsic value, beyond the divinatory plane.
