Daphnomancy
Daphnomancy is the divinatory practice that uses branches or leaves of laurel (daphne in Greek) cast onto fire. The crackling, the flame produced and the shapes taken by the remains are interpreted as signs. It was widespread in the oracular sanctuaries of Apollo, god of laurel and prophecy.
Origin
The laurel was sacred to Apollo: at Delphi the Pythia chewed laurel leaves before prophesying. Daphnomancy was a popular variant of Apolline divination: if the fire burned the leaves with loud crackling and high flame, it was a favourable sign; if the leaves were consumed silently, it was an omen of misfortune.
Contemporary tradition
It remains a practice known more for historical interest than actual use. Italian folk traditions preserve domestic uses of laurel for protection (sprigs placed in the home, kitchen and wardrobes) and for good auspices (Christmas, weddings).
FAQ
Can I try it?

Is it a religious practice?
It was part of the Apolline cult in antiquity. Today it is mainly a historical curiosity.
