Crystal ball
The crystal ball is one of the most iconic images of popular cartomancy: a sphere of glass or rock crystal used as a focus for visual concentration. The practice is called crystallomancy or, in English, scrying (the observation of reflecting surfaces).
Tradition
Scrying has very ancient roots. Pliny the Elder in his Naturalis Historia (first century) mentions reading water and crystal surfaces. In the Renaissance the English mathematician John Dee (1527-1608/9) used an obsidian sphere, now in the British Museum, for his "angelic scrying" with Edward Kelley. In the nineteenth century the crystal ball entered popular imagination.
How it is practised
Traditionally one stares at the surface of the sphere (by moonlight or candlelight) in a state of focused relaxation. Inner images, visual flashes and sensations may emerge. It is not about "seeing objectively": it is a meditative-state practice that favours intuition. The quantity and quality of "visions" varies greatly from person to person.
