Clairaudience

Clairaudience is, in parapsychology and contemporary spirituality, the alleged ability to perceive sounds or voices not audible through normal sensory channels. Together with clairvoyance (seeing) and clairsentience (feeling), it is among the faculties classically attributed to psychics.

Tradition

References to clairaudience appear in the mystical texts of many religious traditions: prophets of the religions of the Book who "hear" the divine voice, shamans who speak with spirits, Christian saints who receive inner "locutions". In the 19th century American spiritualism and French spiritism (Allan Kardec) made the faculty an object of popular interest.

State of research

Clairaudience has not been confirmed by double-blind scientific studies. In psychiatry, "hearing voices" without external stimulus is classified as auditory hallucination (a symptom present in some conditions such as schizophrenia). Distinguishing between mystical experience, imagination and pathology requires specialist clinical assessment.

FAQ

Is hearing voices always pathological?

No. Recent studies show that many "non-clinically disturbed" people have occasional experiences of inner voices. When voices cause suffering or impair functioning, it is advisable to consult a professional.

Are there practices that "develop" it?

Esoteric traditions propose meditation, silence, prayer. From a scientific point of view there are no protocols that produce a verifiable ability.

Is it linked to schizophrenia?

Auditory hallucinations may be a symptom. They should be distinguished from occasional and benign experiences. If in doubt, consult a professional.
