Capnomancy
Capnomancy, from the Greek kapnos "smoke" and manteia "divination", is the practice that interprets the shapes and movements of smoke: incense, candle, ritual fire, grains of salt thrown on the flame. It is documented since classical antiquity (Greek temples and oracles) and in the shamanic cultures of northern Europe, Asia and the Americas.
What is observed
Direction: smoke that goes upward and straight is auspicious; to the right it announces news, to the left the past becoming clear, broken signals obstacles. Form: spirals (transformation), veils (spiritual presence), clouds (confusion), jets (urgency). Color: light is favorable, dark invites caution.
Tradition
In ancient Greece it was practiced in temple sacrifices. In indigenous cultures of the Americas, observation of the smoke of the calumet or ritual fire is still part of ceremonial practices (smudging). In the Far East, incense is the object of reading in Taoist and Buddhist temples.
FAQ
Which smoke is best?
Incense allowed to burn slowly is the most stable. Avoid toxic smoke (combustion of plastic or paint).
Is it safe?
Yes, if managed with caution (incense in a fireproof holder, adequate ventilation, attention with children and animals).
Can I use it for closed questions?
Better for open questions and introspection. For yes/no there are more direct tools like the pendulum.
