Candle reading
Ceromancy (from the Latin velum or cera, candle), and more broadly ceromancy of wax, is the divinatory practice that observes the flame, melted wax and residues of a lit candle. It is widespread in Mediterranean popular traditions, in Hispanic-American ones and in Afro-Cuban spirituality (Santería).
What is observed
The flame: tall and clear is favourable, flickering signals instability, low and faint weariness, going out the closure of the ritual. The wax: dripping to the right (action, future), to the left (past), in heavy drops (intense emotions), in a uniform trail (clarity). The final residues are read as symbols (heart, cross, obstacle, journey).
Colours and meanings
White: peace, protection, beginnings. Red: love, passion. Green: money, prosperity. Yellow: intellect, study. Blue: calm, communication. Black: release, protection. Purple: spirituality. Pink: self-care. Tradition attributes specific ritual intentions to colours.
