Biorhythm
The biorhythm is a popular theory formulated between the late 19th and early 20th centuries by physicians Wilhelm Fliess (1858-1928) and Hermann Swoboda (1873-1963). It holds that three constant cycles, calculated from the date of birth, govern the human being: physical (23 days), emotional (28 days), intellectual (33 days).
The three cycles
Each cycle consists of a positive phase (charging) and a negative phase (recovery). When a cycle crosses zero one speaks of a "critical day": a moment of greater vulnerability according to the theory s supporters. When two or three cycles are critical on the same day (super-critical) maximum sensitivity would be recorded.
Scientific status
The biorhythm is classified as pseudoscience by the contemporary scientific community. Studies in the 1970s found no significant correlations between Fliess/Swoboda cycles and real performance (accidents, sports performance, health). It remains an instrument of symbolic self-observation, not a diagnostic system.
FAQ
Is it scientifically grounded?
No. Replication studies have not confirmed the theory.
Can I use it for sports training?
More reliable indications come from resting heart rate, sleep and body perception. The biorhythm can be a small symbolic aid, not a sole guide.
Is it linked to astrology?
No. It is based only on the date of birth as "phase 0", not on the positions of the planets.
