Abacomancy

Abacomancy is an ancient divinatory practice consisting of reading figures traced on a surface covered with dust, fine sand or ashes. The term derives from the Greek abax, "calculation tablet", and manteia, "divination". It is one of the simplest mancias and is close to geomancy.

Technique

A tablet or flat plate is prepared, covered with a thin layer of powder (sand, ash, flour). A question is posed and signs are traced with a stick or finger, or the movement appears randomly (throwing small objects, blowing). Shapes are interpreted as symbols (circle, cross, straight line, broken).

Origin

Attested in classical antiquity and the medieval Arab world, it is related to geomancy (working with earth) and halomancy (with salt). Practiced both in popular contexts and Renaissance courts. Today less widespread than other mancias and documented mainly in occult history studies.
